Focus On The Non-Scale Victories

By- Ellen Levine, MS, RDN, EP

We tend to be very tied to a number on the scale. This number does have some importance. However, the amount of space it often “rents” in our minds is not productive. Often, we feel as if we are doing everything right in terms of eating and exercise and the number does not budge, or it fluctuates 1-2lbs. The truth is that there are many factors that contribute to what our weight is on a given day and factors change from one day to the next. Weighing yourself once per week is enough to give you the information you need to keep going the way you are or to makes changes. Think of it only as data, try not to attach any emotions to it because it does not measure your worth.

Focus on how you feel as you incorporate the healthy changes that will result in weight loss. Do your clothes feel looser? If so, you have lost inches. Do your joints feel better, less stiff, or painful? This is a good indication that you are less inflamed by removing the inflammatory foods. Are you less bloated and more regular? Your digestive system is happy to be receiving the less processed foods and instead those that are rich in prebiotics and probiotics, so it can work more efficiently and effectively.

Keep your weight in perspective. Focus on making the right changes and it will take care of itself. Even if it takes more time than you are expecting, do not be discouraged, slow and steady results is long-term change.
