Seize The Opportunity

By - Ellen Levine, MS, RDN, EP

Where has the summer gone? We have celebrated Memorial Day and Fourth of July and it may seem like Labor Day is fast approaching. Why not take some time to consciously revel in the remaining warm and sunny days of this  playful season?

Slow down between now and the end of September when you will likely need to shift into the beautiful busyness and planning of the holiday season. Plan a day or a weekend away where you completely unplug and unwind from work and responsibilities. Better yet, do not plan it but seize the opportunity when it presents itself! When the forecast is exceptionally perfect choose to take care of you and if possible, (and if desired) bring a loved one along or make a surprise visit to a loved one in the process.

This may not require going anywhere. If it gives you pleasure to be home and read, write, go for a walk or a bike ride – then do that. Maybe you have been busy and have not had a minute to enjoy the summer produce – support a local farm market and make one of your favorite meals or something completely new and outside of your comfort zone.

Focus on what you are grateful for, and you will receive more things to be grateful for. Let your love ones know that you love them. Let your body know how much you appreciate it. Let God, The Universe, your Higher Power (fill in the blank), know how much you love them and how much they continually bless you. Show the pets and things in your life appreciation. You may be surprised how much better your dog, cat, car or house starts acting!

Now is the time to feel good and relax as we finish up the lazy, dog days of summer. More importantly enjoy these days and feel good, not guilty, about it. This will allow you to be more refreshed and ready to approach your next season with a smile and an ability to manage the next part of the journey.
